In this scavenger hunt variation, participants drove to destinations rather than walked This activity was proposed by the client Ordinarily, we would expect Risk Management to give us a load of trouble if we suggested anything like this, but the day went without a hitch and everyone had a great time. The course for this particular rally began in Mountain View, went up to Skyline, down to Highway 9 and eventually ending up in Los Gatos. The stops included interesting parks which most people are not familiar with and enough nearby restrooms and mini marts to make the day enjoyable. As indicated below, this isn't a race, it's precision driving with the only time measurement being from the departure of one destination to the arrival at the next. Here's a sample from the Course Guide:
Welcome drivers and participants.
Using whatever means, divide yourselves into teams by cars. Each car should have at least 2 people and the total number of cars should be no more than 8.
The number of people per car has no bearing on the outcome of the rally. With the right team, four people in a beat up Pinto easily can win out over a fast, shiny Ferrari with an over anxious driver.
The basic idea is to drive to destinations using only the directions in the course guide. No maps are allowed. Each destination has a driving time allocated to it which is based on an average driving ability. You will not be aware of the optimum driving time. Merely drive as you normally would to reach each destination; speed is not the essential factor. At each destination will be a checkpoint with a timing fudge. The time from one destination to another is logged at each checkpoint and points are added for the difference between the allotted time and your actual time at a rate of 1 point per minute. Fractions are rounded to the next higher point value; 1 minute = 1 point, 1 1/2 minutes = 2 points, etc. For example, if the allotted drive time between point A and point B was 15 minutes, you would receive S ! points for being either 5 minutes early or 5 minutes late. Each car will receive a stopwatch. When you arrive at the checkpoint, stop your stopwatch and have the time recorded by the timing judge. Your stopwatch will be reset to zero and then restarted when you leave for the next checkpoint. Since the timing does not start until departure, feel free to stop at any checkpoint to rest or otherwise refresh yourself. Once all cars are at the final destination, the judges will tally the number of points each team accumulated for being too early or too late to each checkpoint. The team with the lowest score will be the winner. In case of a tie, the exact time (including fractions) will determine the winner.
Keep your eyes open along the route to each destination. There are bonus questions throughout the manual which can be worth valuable points. fill in the blanks as you go. The bonus questions are in no particular order.
Cars will leave the starting area at one minute intervals until all cars are gone. When counting streets; freeways, expressways, etc. count as one street Freeway onramps and offramps, driveway entrances, etc. do not count.
Should you become hopelessly lost call the Indy Bender Roadside Assistance Hotline. An operator will be standing by with a copy of the course guide.
Course Leg #2
1. Continue on the one-way drive until you're back where you entered the complex
2. Turn right at the stop light where you entered.
3. Follow the street until it ends. Turn right.
4. At the first stop light, turn left.
5. After about 2 miles this street will end. At the light just before this happens, turn left.
6. This street will also end in about 2 miles. Just before that happens you'll see a park on your right. Turn in at the second entrance.
BONUS: Just before a street ends there will be bus stops on the right and the big discount bull's-eye on the left. Look down the street just after these things and see if you see a place where Penn & Teller might hang out.
